As long as your a confident mechanic type as you'd have to know what parts are mk2 and what are mk1, be confident in getting the wiring all set up etc… if you are then go for it… if your not then try and go for something else.

It's got different seats etc to the mk1 so depending on what it's had done; if you want to go original mk1 it may end up costing a lot.. if you want to go modified and you confident then it may be worth a pop.  Obviously only MalC has seen it so it's a sweeping opinion.

Did MalC see anything else that wasn't listed?

thanks for the advice, i am a confident mechanic type but this will be my first vw so ive got alot to learn!!

i would b looking to take the interior back to original but i was thinking the seats would have the same pointing points as the originals so maybe no modification was done to fit them!!

i dont understand why the gearbox mount needs lowering or what kind of a job the caliper brackets will be? are they are bought part and just bolted on or do they need fabricating?

thanks guys

I don't understand what they mean by 'gearbox mount needs lowering' either, I was under the impression of you bought the correct aftermarket part, it fitted spot on. So it sounds like they've made their own, and its the wrong size. But you'd need to clarify there.

yeh it all sounds abit suspect to me!!

i like the car and id much rather have mechanical work to do than bodywork but i dont know enough to make a decision!!

what kind of costs do you think would be involved just to get it running and on the road?

Its totally impossible to say, the devil is in the detail. It might simply be a 10 minute job to adjust the mount, or it could mean buying the correct parts at >?200 or so. The wiring could be simple to connect, and they simply didn't have the know-how. Or it could be a total nightmare with strange damage, missing connectors, wrong colour codes on wires, etc and you're looking at sourcing or making your own new, correct loom for it, or better still ditching the lot and going for Megasquirt (would still need some kind of loom tho).

Having looked at the other work, "shifter needs mounting" - not trivial either!

yeh you've hit the nail on the head there! none of the jobs are to straight forward and some of them like you've mentioned could be alright to do or could be a nightmare!

i think ill go have a look at it and get him to point out what hes meaning in the advert, ill get a better idea then!!

would any of you guys tackle it as your first vw if i could get him bargined down to nearer the grand mark?

Hi farmerfella.

I have recently bought a mk1 gti after a year of looking. I went for something that was almost original with some minor suspension mods over something heavily modified.

The problems start when you don't know how the car is built, so every 'small niggle' becomes a massive headache.

At least if you got someting a little more standard, and running, you would be able to enjoy it for a while and learn about the car before modifying.

Just my opinion mate, but good luck.

Point well made and somewhere along my thought process too… probably best going for something which with prove a little less problematic..  :dontknow:

if your a mechanical type and for one has the space to put something like this to work on then i would say go for it if you could barter him down a bit, the main thing with that one is that the shell is mint,

at least your willing to give it ago and ask the right questions if you need to  :)

yeh its going to cost a bit but it'll return a lot of fun.

its the space i wish i had for mine

thanks for all the feedback its given me alot to think about.

yeh it makes sense to get a more standard one to learn how its put together instead of getting a non runner, however my mate has a mk1 with a 2L engine in which is a minter so i could look at his or ask on here if i become stuck with something, which im sure i will!!
