You can try emailing VW Germany, however I think they'll stop at what port it was imported to - as happened with me. They confirmed date of manufacture etc and that it was shipped to Grimsby port but that was it.

Maybe VW UK worth a shout too but I tend to find them less responsive!

I think I just sent to their general email address. The reply I got was from; (it's a short one!)

extern.eckberth.von.witzleben@volkswagen.de

This was way back in 2004 so no idea if they'll still be there?

i spoke to VW uk, there have no records for the car. After abit of work, The previous owner told me that roxy was originally registered in germany as the 1st owner wanted the drive the car back from factory and it also explaining the footnote on the V5 (1. registered aboard) - thanks for the update though mate.

Interesting.
That was normally done by the Military to save on the price, car tax etc… in those days.
If remember rightly, you had to stay in the Country of purchase for six months before bringing the car to the UK but I could well be wrong.
First I've heard of someone buying one that way so they could drive it home from the Factory.
Because in those days it wasn't as easy (if that's the right term) to re-register a car in the UK as it is now.

Even the Audi 'Quattro Sport' at the time (50k price tag then) could be picked up at the Factory to a lot of pomp and ceremony and you'd drive away with a UK plate.
I knew a Guy who actually did just that!

Im not 100% sure on the 1st original owner driving the car back but it explains the footnote on the V5. Maybe he was in the army, i have no idea……
