Lowering the suspension apprently casues this. Putting strains were they were never intended to be put....

Bigger heavier cheap aftermarket alloy wheels usually cause this problem
happened to me on my first golf with crappy alloys on it, stick with smaller oldskool alloys

Where's it cracked?

There's 2 places I can think the bulkhead would normally fail or corrode, and both are quite repairable. The first, is around the clutch cable hole. You can buy a repair panel for this area; or repair it with a much simpler/cruder plate if needs be. The other place is the brackets holding the steering rack to the bulkhead. This is normally easy enough to repair by welding.

around the steering rack, some one tried to nick my car and then the steering just wouldnt steer after that.

Last time I fixed one of those, the engine was out so it was a pretty simple repair. I'm not sure what access is like with the engine in, I'd imagine you at least need to remove the exhaust manifold for decent access. Don't the garage fancy repairing it?

they "dont do that sort of thing"

its going to head back to tim to do, seeing as it looks like he will be making a fortune out of me with the other restro work i need to do… may as well get it all done in the same place.

Ooo, nasty. Still, as everyone has said, it's repairable as long as the engine is out ;)

im not sure if it was the idiot in the Mercedes who decided to hurt my car, or if it was the idiots who tried to steal it.

mate, you needn't worry about the welding, The welding at Tim's place is amazing, going to have my engine mount welded in there soon!!
u can't worry about money if you own an old car i think its just part and parcel with any motor, as my dad says
cars are just skips with wheels to throw your money into whilst you drive

while waiting for my car to be picked up i met a south african who has offered to get me parts if i need them, not only that but he drove a rivage too, which led to lots of conversation about getting it to a really good standard so he could drive it back to south africa, im hoping he joins up here because i think that would make a really interesting story.

also: my friends G-Wagon also has a cracked bulk head, but he hit a deer yesterday and the truck is a write off.

hi i just read ur posts.

i had the same bulkhead problem.  i was told the main reason why this happens is if your clutch is on its way out, causing more tension on the bulkhead.  ive had my rivage for about  1 1/2 year.

1st the clutch cable coming through the bulkhead was ripping itself to shreads scraping against metal. i could see the was a panel soo there were problems before i bought it.
i took it to a garage who put a newer better panel covering the bulkhead. it was ok for while until the cable was shreading itself again, i took the car to my mecahnic who works at home, he put a few washers by the bulkhead and put a thick plastic tube where the cable goes through the bulkhead to the clutch so no scraping with the cable n metal, and lubricating the tube inside.

hope this helps

i was going to get it welded for ?100
but my mechanic charged me ?20 and its fine, he says its safe and has been for many months, jus have to change the clutch to get rid of the tension
