cleaning out or syphen to get rid of rust in petrol tank

Cheers All for your reply's

Why i asked the question, was cause i went to a so called top VW garage & he totally had my eyes out
Took it to him knowing that the filler neck had totally gone, I told him this is the wives car (what she's always wanted) I'm not bothered about the cost, just as long as it is right, he said OK
He charged me over ?850, for cleaning out tank, new filler neck, new inner pump, outer pump, lenght of hose & labour
His words where when i picked it up, take it for a good long run, so we did
Drove over the moors & broke down in the middle of know where & in the dead of nite, in the pissing down rain, the parts he fitted where leaking from every jubilee clip, not amused
Rang him to see if he can recover it, he said he would charge me,  been hell on since,
When i got it to another garge, he was shocked at the state of the works done, he had to fit a new tank, when he emptied the tank, he used 4 paper filter cones, which where full of rust
So in my case, I dont think syphening is the answer
Cheers again Lads

Hi there, best place to start is look in the tank.
Remove back seats (2 screws) there is an inspection
cover / pump housing on some models, lift the cover
(3 screws) then using a screwdriver twist off the cover.

Look inside and see if there is any contamination / sediment.
There is also a smallish filter, where the fuel lines connect
towards the front of the tank.

You can either, syphon out the fuel, and flush it out, drop
the tank off (need to remove / lower back axel though.

Other thing to do is replace fuel filter, on a GTi / Gli
its near the battery. Either way its not a too big a job
just a bit fiddly / time consuming, just be careful if
you start removing the tank, be careful with the bolts
holding the axel on, spray loads of WD40 etc.. and leave
to soak for a while, dont want to snap these buggers off!!.
They can be sorted but its not simple.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Dib.

Or you could stick some magnets in.  Did it to mine, same problem, worked a treat.

Magnets will sort of work, if the filler neck has rusted and got
a hole in it, the muck off the road gets in there as the filler neck
pipe is behind the wheel, and you end up with bits of dirt / mud
which block the filter / fuel lines (did on mine anyway) just
depends how bad it is?, might get away with magnets if you are lucky.

What dib says. Best to clear out the mud, there also maybe water which will need clearing as will lead to rust..
