cleaning engine parts

need to clean some parts, alternator bracket,engine mounts,etc been reading about brick acid to remove rust and grime etc,,wondered if anyone has used it or other products?

Depends how far you want to go.

Brick acid is great for completely stripping parts. Used it on all my engine parts ( see my thread for the results) including nuts and bolts before zinc plating.

Bear in mind parts will rust very quickly once stripped with acid so will need prepping straight away. I used Eastwood metal prep, then primer, then top coat of paint.

Results are great and well worth the time and effort.

petrol works great for normal cleaning, as does white spirit, meths, parafin etc.

if its only brackets etc try your local sandblasters they will come up like new.

if its oilybits put them in the dishwasher ( just dont get caught!!!!) the powder is ace degreaser

I used carb cleaner in and aerosol can to clean build up of oil deposits, worked really well.
