Clarkson loves the mk1 gti!

Love him or hate him he's a mk1 fan!!  In the latest episode saying about the BMW 1M…driven nothing quite as perfect since the original golf gti!  And it's not the first time he's said that kind of thing.  More fun than a night with Elle MacPhearson was another quote I remember he said about the gti (although to be honest I'm pretty torn there)

I know!!!  It'd be awesome to have him as an owner… wonder why he doesn't have one???  Or does he!?!???  The man is a living legend!  Turned car journalism into something that even my missus (not interested in cars but like my mk1) likes watching!!

Yeah I don't know why he hasn't, although I have a feeling what he's driving depends on what deals companies provide him.  Everyone does watch it, although I have to say they kind of need to update the format or something as other than differing cars it is all very samey these days

Yea he also said this about the mk1….

"If this car was announced today, id wet myself with excitement"

or words to that effect.  He also awarded it THE car of the 20th centry.

Oooof, tough call that one...lancia stratos and rs200 were pretty damn iconic for me!

As it was small, nimble and fast it brought something new to rally….. not the MOST iconic but there's no denying that it was very good and different… that is iconic  :dontknow:

Reckon they need to do an old cars round the track feature sometime featuring a mk1 gti (obviously) and things like an escort cosworth, 205 gti etc although I doubt they'd find many that owners would let the stig loose in.

Maybe we should have a whip round and present Mr Clarkson with a mk1 and make him an honoury member.. Maybe we could have a competition, £5 each and the lucky winner gets to present it to him on top gear?..  :D

Imagine being Jeremy Clarkson and being presented with a mk1 golf GTI.. A car you reviewed and praised so many times.. The car by which you measured all others by.. Imagine it being presented to him by the fastest growing car club in history having been lovingly restored by its club members.. i would suggest that you might even see tears.. I bet that would be the best moment in his life and lets face it.. the guy needs a boost right now.. So is it possible?.. :dontknow:

Well what we would need is donations in parts, services, money and time.. Is it achievable?.. :dontknow:

I reckon wih the amount of stuff lurking in folks Garages there should be enough bit's around the UK to start production.

I will start off the Donations with a Single Headlight Grille.

Thing is though where would it be built?
I can just see the look on his face too..!!!!!!

Well this is the thing isn't it.. We would need teams.. A build team, a fund raising team, a supplies team and enough people to take part as possible.. If we can get enough interest, which actually equates to money and enthusiasm, then I think it is possible, but we can't start something and end up with just half a dozen people shelling out hundreds of pounds on their own.. If it were done like the monthly donations stats where people can see how much is needed for the next part of the resto, we might get interest, but would that be at the expense of the club..?..

Maybe if there was enough interest, the club might allow a percentage of donations to the club to be spent on the club resto project and encourage more people to donate and get involved every month?..  :dontknow:
