Chassis number, anybody can help?

The Golf GTI I am about to buy has this chassis number:

WVWZZZ19ZDW618480.

What kind of info can we get from the number?

The main reason for this is to double check if it was born as a GTI or if it has been modified.

PS. did late 1983 GTI have weel arches of the same body paint colour?

You need to see the log book and contact Volkswagen milto keynes to be 100% as the chasis number is just exactly that, The "DW" denotes a build month/year i think, as EW chassis numbers were used on campaign Gti`s

other tell tale signs it is an original Gti would come from the data sticker in the boot (if theres one there!) it will usually be on the panel where the rear of the light clusters are, it will tell you paint code, engine type (should be DX on the late Gti for the 1800) gearbox code and interior trim code.

as for the arches it was only the Pirelli edition Mk1 saloon GTI (LHD) from europe that had body coloured arches and bumpers, and wing mirrors from the factory, but anyone could have got that done at a body shop, its nothing mega but the black plastic arches are hard to find and are selling for a fortune at the minute!!

Hate to break it to you but that's a Mk2, not a Mk1. Also, you cannot tell if its a GTI or not from the chassis number, unless you approach VW about it. They don't have records that go that far back, though, I don't think….

In fact, on further checking that chassis number doesn't make sense. The 19 indicates Mk2, but these only started in 1984 MY (E letter identifier). So, its an anomoly. Maybe its a ringed car, there were plenty of them in the era and its quite conceivable its survived to this day…..

maybe he miss read the 17 for a 19 :dontknow: he is in Italy so maybe they were numbered differently?

Milton keynes hold masses of records for early cars, i got confirmation of build date etc for my series 1 Gti when i had it

OK bengi3, can you double check it? Cos at the moment its not right! Chassis number format is a worldwide format, it doesn't vary between different countries.

The number is correct: WVWZZZ19ZDW618480.

I got it from a web-based inquiry at the register using the plate number (is a 5 euros thing).

It has been registered in July 1983.

this is the ebay auction:

Where did you check, on the car, or on your V5? The one on the V5 is incomplete but the first 6 digits arent important. WVW is the manufacturer's unique code and ZZZ are filler characters. Also I doubt your 3rd character is a 2, its probably a Z which is another filler character.
