I wouldn't recommend a car cover because if there's any wetness under it, it'll keep your car damp the whole time. Even if you put it away dry, the rain has a way of evaporating under the cover!

Also, if it's parked up for that long on grass, bits underneath might go rusty.

You also risk animals moving in (a squirrel started storing nuts part of my engine bay when mine was parked up for a few months!).

I got one from a car cover company and its not that great, its supposed to let moisture in so it'll breathe, but whenever it rains the car gets soaked, but ti does dry out.

As requested we now quote for their Monsoon and Voyager Outdoor covers for your VW Golf      and advise the full specifications are as follows:

Monsoon:  These are sturdy covers that have been specially designed for outdoor, winter protection. The outer layer is robust yet pliable PVC and the cover is soft lined for maximum care of paint and body fittings. Monsoon covers fit  snugly with elasticated hems and a unique detachable strap system for ease of fitment. Roof vents allow dispersal of any condensation or build up of damp.

These robust covers have been designed for cars that remain outdoors through winter & rainy seasons and will provide full protection against rain, snow, frost, tree sap, birds, dirt, dust, scuffs & scratches.  Double stitching and heat sealed seams ensure long life & that the weather remains on the outside of the cover!

'Monsoon' covers offer maximum protection, yet at a sensible price. They are suitable for continual use in all winter weather conditions including very low temperatures where the fabric still remains pliable.

Special Internet Price  ?106.50 Incl Vat

Voyager: A very strong yet lightweight breathable covers for both ʽin garageʼ and outdoor use. Fabric breathability ensures that damp or condensation can evaporate away from the covered car whilst water resistance is maintained by a special bonded coating that ensures that 95% of rain is shed from the fabric surface.

Voyager covers feature double stitching for strength, elasticated hems and a unique detachable strap system is included for ease of fitment with anti scratch fittings. They are manufactured from a latest generation 210G silver fabric that reflects UV & sunshine. The construction & durability of Voyager covers makes them a favourite in both hot climates & very cold conditions. The fabric is non abrasive and compresses down to a compact size that is ideal for tucking in the back when not in use.  Special Internet Price: ?59.95 incl vat

They've now called me back and had made a small error, they were referring to the new model being developed for the MK2 golf as its full tailored. I had a moan and said that the MK1 was just as if not more so important.
He called the factory again and said it may be considered next year but as the tin top and floppy top have different profiles they will have to see..
Untill then it remains the 2 from my earlier listing, but they have said for club members they will do the monsoon for ?89.95 plus postage, just quote the forum and username..
I've ordered mine cos i dont want my new mohair roof messed up over winter……

I've got a 'half' cover for my car cost me ?50 from cover systems. it was supposed to be waterproof and breathable, it's not waterproof… it is now tho i bought a giant an of fabric waterproofing spray from millets and it's now waterproof.
It's super easy to get on and off (except in high winds obviously) and fits really well.
It's well made only had to put in 2 eyes at the front to tie it down to the wipers, but no other complaints about it at all, and it's been used in torrential rain (before waterproofing) and did exceptionally well considering.
made specifically for the mk 1 came the NEXT DAY!  lovely bloke on the other end of the line.  would definately buy from them again.

I would advise you DON'T get a cover from halfords, they're rubbish! serious waste of money, could barely keep spit out let alone rain. the seams aren't water proof and only have one fold.

MattG (i think that's the right matt anyway) on here has one from argos and he swears by it.

what you have to mind about covers is that they're not supposed to stay on for long periods of time.  However, i've left my car cover on (halfords one) for a week and had no problems with it.  all the ones i've had experience with will allow air flow cos they don't tie down very tightly allowing the underside and car to dry out fully with no problems.  Condensation really isn't a problem as the cover's are light fabric.  i think most of the problems and hate of covers comes from 'other's experiences from donkey ago when covers really were crap.

I regularly put my cover on my already wet car, even if the covers still wet, i have to cover it at work if it's raining, it's a cabby and the rear window leaks like a sieve and the front seals not too great so water runs along the frame onto the seats.  It really isn't the big problem everyone thinks it is all depends on your way of doing things.

BEWARE KY05 UCO, blind and deaf white haired driver of red transit, avoid at all costs, he thinks running cars on to the verge is ok. i'm fine, car's fine, mood and make up not so good.
