I think you mean catalytic converter, and as far as I'm aware it's any car built after 1992 or'93 (can't remember which) must have a catalytic converter, though I may be wrong. But I think you'll have to keep yours on. Do a bit of research using Google (it's your friend) or better still ask your local M.O.T tester.
Hope I've helped  :)

You'll find the cat missing from all cars in scrapyards! They remove them and recycle the metals, since its one of the few parts worth anything. Since they wear out over time, its one of those things you tend to buy a new one of, when needed.

What's the story, Mk1 Golf shouldn't need a cat for the UK MoT?

As far as I know Cats were fitted to some late Rivage models, but to no other Mk1's. My Sportline is on a 'K' reg with original exhaust and doesn't have a Cat.

Must be after 1993, I remember going through this debate when i got my polo gt which was registered 1991 on a J which had the catalyst badge on the back and a cat in the pipe (lol) but it wasn't required by law, but my friend who also had a polo with a catalyst on an L plate had to keep his in.

Or it could just be that polo's are so unloved no-one cares what you do to them…

I dont think (not 100%) that the DX engine was compatable with a catalyst.  I have seen gti's with a cat but with a different engine, a 2H coded one.

Does it not go from manufacture date rather than registration date?  Therefore excluding the Mk1 from the catalyst regulations?

See here for the page from the late VW Cabriolet brochure, Rivage/Clipper Cat specs

The brochure was issued January 1993. The brochure states a non cat spec for Clipper, Sportline and Rivage. But there is also a Rivage and Clipper cat spec.

@ Ryanstratton, have you looked under your car to see if you have a cat installed and is your car carb or injection?
