Buying Advice

Ok folks, was advised to come here by a mate as i am looking at getting a golf, but i have found a project that needs restoring, and if i get it, i will be having it by next week, will post pics up of it, and do a full on project diary of course

if i dont get it i will be getting a mk3, but im going for the old skool, so if things go well i will be joining you guys


some things i need to know, is what to look for when buying

this car is a gti, but a 1,6 8v with 4 speed box, is that normal?

Firstly, welcome to the site….!

1.6 and 4 speed is normal for a really old GTI. I think they got 5 speeds from around 1980 onwards, and then 1.8 from 81/82 or something like that. Somewhere on the home page there is a timeline of the changes.

Also on the home page is a buying guide, could possibly do with a little update but its generally a good guide, should sort you out on typical things to check!
