Hi, I?ve tried to find a nice GTI mk1 for several years but it?s really difficult. In 1993 I owned a original black -83 and I miss this car really much. My question is if a convertible GLi is an option? Is the feeling almost the same as the hatchback version? Do anyone have experience of both cars? I found a GLi from 1986 in a original standard with the 112hp engine and maybe this is the last possibility to get close to the normal GTi again? Anyone who can comment?
I've got both, I've had five in total and currently run a G-plate GTI Cabriolet and an A-reg GTI hardtop.
Both cars have a very similar feel. Both are loud, both go pretty much the same, the handling on the Cabriolet is upto standard and they both stop pretty much the same.
If the cabby you are looking at is clean and well looked after, then I'd say go for it. They are every bit as fun as the GTI. They might be fractionally slower on paper but in real life, they are practically the same car. With the added bonus that if the sun ever shines, you can get some wind in the hair motoring on the case.

I can not answer the question comparing the gti and the cabriolet but I'm sure someone will be along who can.
Glad to see someone from Sweden on here and I hope we can all help you get a mk1 in your life :y:

Basically I would advise you to buy thye car you want and never compromise. The Cabby will never ride as well as a Hatch but makes up for it in other ways, the performance is slightly down on the Hatch due to the 100Kg extra weight but not that you'd notice and the fact that it's so low down in the sills etc means it doesn't damage the handling much either, it's just a little heavier.like always going out with a mate in the car!
Basically if you want a Hatch wait for the right one.
