It must be a 1983 model (these were made from Aug 1982), since they didn't do a GTI cabriolet until then. Before the GTI, the cabbys were called GLi. Cabriolets in themselves aren't particularly rare, in comparison with other classic cars. But the older ones are obviously rarer, if you consider a 'split' at around 1986/1987 when the Clippers and GTIs started coming with the bodykit, then any cabby older than this with the traditional grille, etc is relatively "rare" (and I prefer this look too!)

There's a handy guide on page 2 of this: http://www.vwgolfmk1.info/main/Buyingacab.pdf

Check the chassis number, in particular the 10th character:

WVWZZZ15ZDKxxxxxx

Since this is a letter identifying the 'model year'. Model years run from August the previous year to July of the year, for example 1983 model year runs Aug 82 - July 83.

A = 1980
B = 1981
C = 1982
D = 1983
E = 1984
etc

If it was regsitered on 1st Aug in the UK it must have been built a few weeks or months earlier. It will have been one of the last 1.6 82 model year cars, 83 model year would have been 1.8. Karmann might have been slightly out of sync with the hardtops from VW though. In theory it should have been badged GLi but it was at the crossover point :dontknow:

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

GLi change to GTi was '84 MY, i.e. August 1983. So one year of 1.8 GLI production.

Does this mean the current buyer's guide is incorrect?

Buyers Guide OK (hatch only)

For cab:
79-81 1.6 GLi
82-83 1.8 GLi
84-93 1.8 GTi

I think the problem with the cabby buyer's guide is that it relates to calendar years of UK registration, so 1. they lag actual factory production by anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of years, cars would have remained unregistered for a little while, 2. they don't match up with Aug-July 'model years'.

Also the cabby buyers guide suggests:

1.6 GLi
1.6 GTI
1.8 GTI

and an overlap between 1983 and 1985 when both GLi and GTI were available.

scarfacevws def wrong badge then, I'd prefer GLi anyway more select and not as boy racerish as GTI

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Cabbys more about show than go, injection engine is good to have but Cabriolets suit a GLi badge better than a GTI.

Think VW changed purely for marketing reasons, the powerful cachet of GTI just too strong to ignore.

Heres my 83 GLi………

I have had GTi`s and there is not a lot of difference really, mostly
trim as far as I can tell, GLi seats are not as supportive as GTi and
you get the nice blue trim in GLi`s !! (I like it as its a bit different).

Badge has been replaced with one that has the "silver" on it,
one in pic has faded, but you can just make it out.

Sorry for the large pics :roll:
