bloody government.......

well, went down to local scrappy last night to get a part with a mate, just out of intrest asked if any mk1 golfs in, to my suprise he said yes and took me to have a look, They have a complete mk1 golf gti in black with sunroof, all glass intact inc alloy, not sure of the alloys name but they look like spider legs ( makes sense somewhere), i asked how much for the entire car as she looked solid with no signs of rot, they then tell me she was part of te government scrappage scheme and has to be broken     .

all she needs is a little tlc to put her on the road, 135000 on clock and runs fine. I could have cried.

the scrapy is Doncaster motor spares on bentley moor lane, they now have website under Motorhog.co.uk

regards

chris :D  :D

Would have been there by now if I wasn't at work today! Will have to pop Monday. How does it work there, can you wander round or not?

The main bodyshell is useless because it carries the chassis number, and its impossible to reregister this once its declared scrapped. In theory it could be sold on as a "part" and a new chassis number applied but in practice I think you'd need to go through IVA and get a Q plate, and it would cost at least £450 (price of IVA test), etc etc.

If it were decent enough, why didn't the dealer offer to p/x it for £2000?

The chasis has to be destroyed.  Everything else that can come off of it can be sold as far as I'm aware  :dontknow: ….. I'd have been there ripping everything off of it.  Poor gti… that's one less classic on the road putting this club in an even more important position in keeping the mk1 golf alive.  Our cars are probably becoming more and more rare each week as the scrappage scheme bites

The scrappage scheme's now over. You're right though, values of the cars remaining have definitely gone up because they're that much rarer now. And……the scrapped decent condition ones have meant a glut of cheap used parts.

a dealer couldnt offer £2k for it as its not worth that to them.  The max they could offer would be what they thought it would go through an auction at.  and as in essence it is a 25 year plus car with 135k on the clock 2-300 is about your lot.  these cars are only worth something to the enthusiast. US!

Mk1GTi
Rallye Golf
Mk5 GTi
Mk7 GTD

A decent Golf GTI is easily worth more than £2000, and everyone in the trade knows its value fairly accurately so it will get a good trade in price, and auction price, etc etc.

what about using it as a track car.....

what about using it as a track car…..

All track day operators insist on a car being mechanically sound, and most judge this by asking the car is road legal, MoT'd and taxed. Generally if you want to take a non-road legal car for a trackday, you'd need to make individual arrangements.
