Anyone know the history of this car?

Just a stab in the dark to see if anyone knows anything about this car? It's up for sale in Norwich and I'm going to have a look…

Here's the description. Should I be concerned about the small be of rust described?
1983 (A) mk1 Golf Gti, 1.8, 3door, black, 2 months tax and mot jan 08. tidy example for a car of this age, good solid reliable car i baught for my wife who had great fun driving it for the past year or so on her daily 70 mile round trip to work and back. needs must and now we have a daughter its no longer practical, so shes now got a boring fiesta 5 door.

great looking tidy car, not a show winner but we've been stopped on a few occasions where people have just wanted to look at it. mot mechanic from volk-a-part, norwich, said he hadnt seen one as solid as this for a long time.

previously owned by a vw enthusiasts mother, he had restored it not long before we baught it.

recent exhaust back box, water pump and housing, belts replaced, appart from serviceing this is all ive had to spend on it.

as i said, its no show winner, heres some of the bits im a little bit unhappy about, bearing in mind she sits the same now as when we baught her. small bit of rust behid the passenger wing at the bottom of the windscreen. tail gate sits out a little one one side. tiny rust spot on rear seat belt mounts im told. small rips in rear of headlining. maf has never worked. door cards tatty. thats about it.

How much does he want for it?

The negatives he mentions aren't too bad for a car thats almost 25 years old.  Do you want the car as a run around or are you after something to use in shows?

He's asking ?1550. I want it to be a good looking everyday usable car.

I'd say go for it then.  From the photo the bodywork looks good (apart from the rust mentioned) and as long as the ,ileage isn't sky high ?1550 seems OK.

the mileage is 247,000 is that sky high? obviously for any normal car this is sky high.

That is pretty high.  Is there much history with it?  MOTs, receipts for works carried out etc;
If the engine has been properly serviced in this time you should be OK.  However, keep an eye on the for sale section as you could get a similar condition mk1 with a lot less mileage for the same price.  Or show the guy some adverts from here and you may be able to knock the price down.
