Air Impact Wrenches, info please

hi

bought a set of air tools yesterday to aid me in my 3a conversion, since the car is off the floor on axle stands and i hadn't taken the wheels off (didn't think i'd need to  ), i thought it would be able to undo the wheel bolts?? so could get the driveshafts off to make things easier getting the engine back in

the max pressure i can get is 130 psi is this enough or does it need more?? the booklet with the tools is awful and only really says the "do nots" etc.

thing is i've got a feeling they're on too tight as i usually do them up with a breaker bar :banghead:

also its got a switch with 1 to 4 on it, i'm assuming 4 is giving the greatest torque right??

its a 3/8 drive one if thats any help??

is there any other way i can lock the wheels and undo the bolts safely? (i have no brakes though as i've uprated the servo and m/c     )

cheers

Chris

Most tools are specced to a 90psi max. It's the volume of the compressor that counts.

You're right, 1 to 4 is the torque it applies, from least to most. There should also be a reverse setting for undoing bolts - make sure you don't wind them in further!

I'd say that a 3/8" drive for wheel bolts is probably a bit weedy - I use 1/2" and a proper impact socket myself.

You could try jacking the wheel and tyre up if you've got a trolley jack, and then use the breaker bar on it once you've put some of the weight of the car onto the wheel.
