A little advice please.

Hello,

I am looking for a mk1 swallow tail or S1 but cant find one for love nor money! I have seen a 1982 GTI, would this be a S2? Would I be able to fit a swallow tail or S1 rear bumper section to give it the small lights easily?

What are the differences with a 1982 to a series one visually apart from the rear lights?

Cheers
Ollie

In no way an expert, but I'll tell ya what I know.

an 82 model will be a S2

The two differences I know between the swallow tail and the S2 are the rear light panel and the bonnet… and the interior dash is different. As I said I'm no expert and I'm sure there are plenty on here that no every little change.

body work wise the s1 has:
small rear lights,
small bumpers,
the towing eyes are on the bumpers not the body, front wings dont have the bumper clip holes,
flag mirrors

other things on an s1 that are different:
entire dash and clocks switches etc,
different seat belts in the front and quite often non in the back,
doorcards dont have pockets,
different fuse box

and swallow tails have an endless list of small differences the most noticable being the rear panel were it dips and the bonnet lines fading 2/3 of the way down…

Thanks guys, thats spot on.

Can you change the rear panel on an S2 to an s1 or swallow tail one? What about the bumpers and dashes etc?

Basically I have seen an s2 shell would I be able to use S1/swallowtail parts on it?

yes you could swap everything over but its an awful lot of work, plus s1 parts can be hard to find and expensive. if i was you i would just wait and find a decent s1 you just have to be patient. you might also find on trying to swap everything over that there are other differences eg. connectors on the backs of switches might be different meaning you then need a whole new loom etc.

you also need to think of resale i would expect a solid and original s2 would be worth more than an s2 with loads of s1 parts grafted in and prob worth more….
