A Bit Of Help Needed.....

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, and apologies if this question comes across as "sad or pointless!"

I am going to look at a 1988 gti cabriolet at the weekend, but am worried, believe it or not, by the lack of power steering on it. :?

As someones whos been pampered with power steering on all his other "sports cars", will i notice a great difference, or am i just getting lazy in my old age?? ops:

Hi, will seem heavy at first but like anything you soon get used to it. Dont let it put you off!

I dont find any differrence between the two to be honest.  

You'll get over it in no time mate. It gives the car a wonderful feeling when you're driving, you can feel everything.

go for it, you dont want power steering interfering when your driving…

you'll only miss it if you try to turn from lock to lock whilst the car isnt moving…

power steering is for girls !!! get buff without it !

I was the same mate when i got mine earlier this week, but its no biggy. and it real does feel better when you are actually driving. only time i miss it is when im parking, but once you are rolling its fine.

iv honestly NEVER owned a car with power steering! 8O

all the company vehicles have it obviously so i still use it a fair bit but like everyone else says, you only feel the difference when parking :wink:

i prefer the driving without it tbh

i have to say, i do not like power steering. yes it's nice and easy, but it is also uninvolving.

I think that if mine had power steering I would drive it harder and get myself in the POO! The fact it hasn't makes every round about a hoot…my Bora'ing TDI has it and it makes you lazy..

power steering is for big heavy cars it filtered down to smaller cars because people started to expect it. the golf weigh's almost nothing if your worried about turning the wheel stick an extra 5 psi in the front tyres for a few weeks till you get used to it. after driving a mk 5 for a few weeks i got back in the golf and realised just how much road feel you lose having a motor turn the wheels for you.

The power steeering will only hinder your driving experience, feel the road, so no to PS

Normal driving is fine without ps in a mk1, no Popeye arms required, even small ladies manage it! As for parking and 3 point turns etc - just try and keep the wheels rolling, even the smallest amount, whilst turning the wheel if possible (if you try and go from one lock to another whilst completely stationary, you'll notice it a lot more), it helps just that bit more…and it's kinder to the tyres I suspect! But seriously, you don't miss it after 2 minutes driving. I don't even have a 'wow' moment when I jump in a modern car. The mk1 is so small, light and easy to place in a parking space anyway! And like Novocaine mentioned, keep the tyres properly inflated, or a bit extra.

No need for power steering in any mk1 and as mentioned takes a lot of feel out of the steering. Jesus, thinking about it my grandma never owned a car with power steering and drove till she was 75, everyone's gone soft these days

ensure your topmounts good and you have decent tyres.

if still need it just put a little more air in the tyres while you get used to it. But provided above you should be fine.
