96 bhp!!

took my golf on the rolling road today….
pumped out 96bhp at the flywheel and 83 at the wheels (@5103rpm), which is rubbish! to say its 115 standard (well around that), and its had a fast cam and a weber carb, pretty gutted to be honest
BUT the guy who did it told me it all needed setting up properley! cam, timing etc….
so another ?100 later and i should be into the 3 figures :D

it's a 23 year old engine mate. a drop of 20 bhp is damn good IMO.

Surely its more milage dependent then time?

My engine is at 68k so it should still be giving 70HP  :dontknow:

I wonder what a twin carb, 16V head and electronic ignition would give.

71HP lol  8O

If you gave inside the engine bay a good service the figures would most probaly become three anyway.

Probably related to coking up inside the cylinder and lower compression due to worn valve stem seals. Changing the oil can add a little bit of performance but not 20bhp. The gain from properly setting up the cam and ignition timing depends on how far they're out. Cam timing doesn't drift out, its either wrong or right (or you have a very stretched belt). (Its possible with a chain to stretch sufficiently, to affect cam timing and therefore performance, but not really a belt). Mixture might be worth checking, and also a fresh set of plugs, correctly gapped. Are you seeing ignition miss events?

light miss fires basically…

also how good is the rolling road? any other cars with known powers been there? what fuel were you on?95 97 or 99? has the ignition timing been changed for the fuel?

air filter clean?

a good supply of cold air? or a weedy fan in front of the car at the back of a unit?

theres a hell of alot of varibles, but tbh I wouldnt bother with power runs untill the cars been set up properly.(to get the cam timing 100% spot on you will need a vernier, as they can always be a smidge out…but it wont get you a shed load  of power)

plus like others your engine is old, and what oil are you running? also do you run a windage tray?

It reminds me of that Top Gear episode where one of the italian sports cars lost 50hp, the equivalent of a VW Lupo.
In your case, this has escaped from your engine…

Its more cold start wear and tear than mileage :)

valve stem seals wont effect the compression, its the valve seating to give a air tight seal which does the bizz
