I dont think youl need spacers to clear the brakes,
If it was me id fit 165/50 bridgestones if the car is very low,
other options
175/50
185/45
195/45
is your mk1 lowered? Any pictures?

Cheers for the advice rich I have only just got it and it got delivered straight to the Bodyshop to be restored by my friend as it has been sat on a driveway for 4 years, it belonged to one of my good friends who passed away 2 years ago and it's taken this long to get it pulled out of the garden, I wanted to get it back on the road in his memory plus no golf deserves to go to the scrap yard
The car doesn't seem to be lowered much if at all but I may get coil overs at some point but don't want it slammed just lowered nice so it's usable
