1983 Replica Number Plates

Hi all,

Unfortunately I don't think there is any way of asking this without sounding like an incredibly anal purist.

I am looking to replace my existing TSR plates which were on the car when I bought it, with some authentic looking replicas.

Does anyone remember/know what style of plates were prevalent in VW dealerships in 1983?  I'm sure that there must have been some changes between now and then.

Would dealerships have printed their details on it?  Was any particular size and font in favour/fashion?

Presumably they would have been acryllic?

Thanks!!

Ian

83 was a plastic plate with euro lettering. yes the dealer whould have had his logo and name at the bottom of the plate.

i'll find the thread in a minute theres a guy called bruce on here who makes plates and knows what needs doing.

i know this because i am also getting a set made for mine so no your not anal

they aint the original plates then X.
it was one of VW's dealership instructions to have there name on the bottom of the plates as free advertising. all dealers do it now but then it was rare apparantly.

Thanks, I will contact Bruce once I know exactly what I'm after.

Just realised that I don't actually know which dealer my car came from!  Do DVLA keep records?

Raised digits that were riveted on a metal plate were used up to 1979. After that acrylic plates were used with the original Charles Wright font up until September 2001 when the font was changed to the New Charles Wright font conforming to BSAU145d (to allow incorporation of the EU or country flag). The dealer name was often displayed at the bottom of the acrylic plate but this was not mandatory and quite a few original plates don't have this.

Thanks for all your help.

I think I'll go with the original Charles Wright.
