Two of you should manage it ok

Depends what's still attached. I'd say with the exhaust and inlet manifold, its a definite 3 person, rather than 2 person, lift. Maybe with the manifolds off, 2 people could do it. Bit awkward to find something to grip onto though. Also, depends what kind of car you're lifting it into! You'll struggle to use a crane to get it into the Mk1 hatchback, since the job of the crane will hit the rear glass.

Best to separate engine + gearbox and then two can easily (?) manage the engine and one can do the gearbox. It's only a few bolts - five min job when they're out of the car and accessible

I'm with oldfart, best remove gearbox - not just weight, but will also be harder to fit into car as one. Got 1.6 GTI engine into boot of my mk2 and out with a mate without to much difficulty. Gearboxes don't weigh too much at all, easy to lift by yourself. I built up the boot floor height with some roof bars and bits of wood so that we didn't have to lift the engine over the boot opening.

Picked up a DX engine the other week, was ok to lift with 2 of you, but then when I came to move it again with my other weaker mate he could'nt hold it and dropped it!!!! what a dougnut!!!

So make sure your mate is a beefcake

all good points, i`m goin in a citroen xantia so it should`t be a problem with clearance for an engine crane, i just can`t be bothered to take one.. they`re really heavy!

i`ll chance it i reckon… cheers.

drop the oil and coolant out of the engine mate, try and get someone else to give you a lift, sorry i was drunk when i wrote that. its easier if you can get a strong beam and some rope and do it that way as your back doesnt take all the strain.  use your knees!
