with no clutch, not very fast. with one, not very fast. floppy tops are not too great for top end. don't know what the book says but i'd imagine 100-105mph is realistic if she's running o.k.

Yeah really.. Unless your talking about KMH not MPH

My 1.8 cabby struggles past 100 roof up and thats downhill.. managed at top whack 95 with the roof down, too much drag… But it is an auto.. although my MK2 thats the same enbgine (same year) hits 115 easier

  my sportline goes really well……infact it seems faster with the roof off as theres less drag   when the roofs up at higher speeds it sounds like satan himself is trying to rip the roof off!!!

I dont push it too hard anyway is its not about speed in the cabby for me but i have seen.. ahem……….3 figure speeds in excess of 100mph on my private runway :D

92 Sportline in Flash Red, Standard **SOLD**

91 G60 Corrado in Aqua Blue pearl

91 Rallye Golf, Tornado Red, AMD tuned to 220bhp 227 flb torque 9j x16 Borbet B alloys

Well a tintop GTI has a top speed of 117mph, so its going to be not much behind that - somewhere around 110-115mph. Remember your speedo will over-read, so you'll probably see 120mph+ on it.

speedo counters are not know to be a whole heap accurate in mk1s though the rev counters are. i hugely doubt a 1.6 floppy will only fall 2mph short of a 1.8 tintop. mk1s are not very aerodynamical with a tin roof!

My auto, 1.6, carb cabby is quite happy up to around 105mph, so I think 110-115 is definitely on for the 1.6 GTI cabby. For top speed, weight isn't such an issue, aerodynamics are. And the two (as you say? or did you mistype) bodystyles will be similar for aerodynamics, since they are the same broad outline shape.

no, i was pointing out that the floppies have even worse drag efficiency than tin tops. i think only minis and busses are worse than them.

Not much, though….

I wish someone just knocked this one on the head by quoting the actual top speeds for 1.8 GTI and 1.6 GTI, hatchback and cabby versions. I've heard the 117mph figure for the 1.8 hatchback, but I've never bothered with top speeds since I kinda value my licence and never go that fast. Apparently over 100mph and you're looking at a ban of some kind, below that and you'd get points but not a ban.

quite the same here. my mk1 rarely goes over 70mph, though a question was asked and gave an opinion i thought to be relevant. why you would want to do 110mph in a floppy top is beyond me. must be noisey as hell.
