1.6 gtd engine question

I am buying a golf van with a 1.6gtd(mk2) engine in it. The auxillery water pump that circulates coolant around turbo area is not wired up. Has anyone fitted these engines and and wired up the auxillery pump? I believe the pump cuts in when the temperature sender mounted near the turbo tells it to. Presumably then it needs to have a constant 12v feed to the pump via the sender unit if it is thermostatically controlled. Any help greatly appreciated

Collecting van tomorrow afternoon so will take some pictures then. Intercooler not fitted yet but looking to put one in front of radiator. To be fair though when i drove it the other day it was no slouch. It would appear that they are quite a tunable lump.

The guy I got it off who had it in an actual mk2 gtd said that he'd had his off the clock (120?) before and had fuel pump turned down a bit for better mpg. Can't wait to get it on the road as my slowly dieing original 1.6d was rather slow.
