x reg should all be 1.6gti - y reg 1.6 or 1.8 - a reg 1.8
it may be manufactured a 1.6 but not registered until 83.
you positive it's a 1.6gti engine in a gti mk1?

didn't want to teach you to suck eggs.
the top rad hose pipe connects to the head(more or less). on the 1.6 the pipe is at an angle and between no 1-2 (or is it 2-3) cylinders. on the 1.8, it comes straight out from the head, between no 3-4 cylinders.

it was a 1.6 a reg- but he wasn't sure if was always a 1.6…
Can i get some advice please-
had been jacked badly on sills so they were bent and rusty
When he went to start it- it didn't start and then turned over for a few seconds before starting with a battery charger, he said it was probably just because he'd cleaned it and left door open with interior light on-dodgy?
Interior was mint, and body was good. Oh and hes only had it a month or 2 but its got 12 months MOT.
?2000 fair? :dontknow:
Thanks

Sills don't bend from bad jacking - they bend if they're corroded. So, it sounds like it needs attention to the bodywork at some point.
Non-starting is an obvious negative point, without further looking at the car you couldn't diagnose it and so can't really make anything more than a guess at what it is. So, a bargaining area there.
Sounds dodgy if he's only had it a month or so and he's now selling.
So, definitely not ?2000! More like ?800-1200 if it has 12 months MoT.
