insurance: why is it..
im 17. passed in january, why is it, that insurance for my 1.1 '83 will be something along the lines of ?460.. but for an extra ?66.. i can get a 1.6 '87 ford capri? it doesnt make sense. and 600+ for a 1.3 '81 jetta..
:dontknow: insurance sucks!

Its because the insurance is based on broad sweeping 'groups', which take into account things which are completely irrelevant for TP only insurance - such as repair times for crash damage, price/availability of parts (when the cars were new-ish). The Ford thus went into a lower group than the VW.
By the way, the 1.6 Capri isn't really a fast car….

have to agree with that.
don't forget, when they were originaly grouped for insurance puposes, cost implications for repairs, were considerably more for a golf than a capri.

Historically foreign cars always had higher ratings than 'UK' models. (Yes I know Ford is American and the Capri was made in Germany but car insurance is bonkers). Now the UK doesn't have any manfacturers left and the remaining factories here are foriegn owned it doesn't seem to matter that much these days.
When I ran a Diesel Jetta 20 years ago it had a much higher grouping than a Fiesta XR2…
I too think ?460 is a steal for a 17 year old.
The best way to get cheap insurnace is to not have any claims, have your own (not mums/dads) policy, don't have any calims, be old and oh did I mention don't claim……

i am intrigued by these claims. I have a feeling that the no claims is only applicable with that particular insurance company. i.e. if you told admiral that you had X years no claims with tesco as a named driver they wouldnt care. :dontknow:
I found elephant and admiral were the cheapest when I was 18. Slightly bigger engine, but ALOT more on insurance.

try Bell they are a subsiduary of Admiral and i have found them superb over the last 3 years, they even gave me the same discount and protected no claims i have on my VR6 when i took out a policy on the cabrio 8O as they dont currently do the dual policy thing and didnt want to lose my custom, cant say fairer than that, mind the 15 year old cabrio was ?10 dearer than a 97 VR6 Highline with mods, dunno how that works :dontknow:
