insurance rant

Is there any wonder that so many youngsters don't bother with insurance?

Matthew passed his test last week :D so (being the law-abiding citizen I am ;) ) I decided to look at having the insurance in his name (its currently in the wife's name with Matthew as named driver)

Direct Line (who its currently insured with) would only give Third Party ONLY cover, and wanted ?2,316

A quick look at Confused.com was even worse - the BEST was over ?4,000 and the worst was a faintly terrifying ?9,999

If he got caught for no insurance every couple of months and got hit for a couple of hundred quid, it would still be cheaper  :banghead:

So - given that the Golf Mk1 is an ideal first car, does anyone have any suggestions? (bear in mind he's 18 next month, so waiting until after his 18th birthday might help)

no insurance will cost moer than few hundred quid. it will cost a squished car for starters and a ban from driving most likely.

cant really add much advice other than ignore confused.com and ring a few places. add your self and the missus as a named driver etc.

You've only looked at two websites! Prices from the more well known insurers are always stupid on anything other than a 1.0l citroen or whatever. Old car + new, young driver = wallet sadness

Try Adrian Flux, there's a rep on the forum and you get a discount if you're a member (worth signing up for alone for the sake of ?15), and from personal experience they'll be much cheaper - they beat Direct Line by ?400 on my golf

P.S. I don't think age makes much difference till he's 25, so you might as well do it now :)

I'm sure there's an insurance company that gives no-claims discount for named drivers (I can't remember the name) - if they'll do it I'd insure it under your name, then name Matthew on it until he's 25, when he can get his own classic policy.

I know what you mean though - the cost of insurance when you're young is so high that it's easy to see why people don't bother.

a number of them do this now, but its still normally better to have it in your own name from the start…

flux, HIC footman james wont touch you till your 19 or in the case of footman james 25 on a classic policy!!!

use this link - http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16250

and get busy on the phone! also get the yellow pages out and call your local brokers as they maybe able to help but I still stand by the fact you will always find it cheaper if you put in the leg work and get on the phone rather than just using internet only sites etc…. also watch what you get as some places like tesco valve give you NOTHING no legal cover, no windscreen cover, no spare car etc…

Daily - 05 plate B6 A4 Avant S Line, with 19s for the summer.. wifes car - Rare Seat Exeo ST Sport 170 Tech
Weekend - MK2 20vt monster - Plus a mk1 caddy I am fixing for my bro

Give lancasters a call. they gave me a good quote so Im with them. I suggested it to someone else on here and they gave a quote almost ?1000 cheaper than anywhere else.

I got a quote of ?1400 third party for a 1.1 with coilovers, performance exhaust etc. I was 17 at the time (last year) and it was my own policy with my dad on it as a named driver.

lancaster are defo worth a try as i've used them in the past and they give out classic policies to 21 and over (although thats irrelevant). if you get a quote of less than ?1800 i would consider that to be reasonable for his age. thats what i paid for my first year at 17 for a 1.2 clio n reg in my mams name with me as a named driver!

i know what your saying about young drivers though. i recently had a quote of ?99,999.00 for a 1.6 auto cabby!  :banghead:

okay, just mocked up a quote, and managed to get down to ?2,616..

the most expensive was ?10,035..
