Insurance Payout

Hi! My boyfriend's Mk1 ('82, I think!), with a 1.6 engine was hit 6mnths ago, liability has been decided (not his fault) and we having major problems getting a decent amout for it as it was a "write off". They are trying to offer us just ?450! Does anyone know how we can get evidence to show you can't buy a MK1 Golf in good condition for that kind of money! His had a solid bodywork, no rust in the arches, one front wing needed replacing but nothing major, it had just had ?500 spent on a MOT and it was a good runner. Please help! :banghead:

Do you have any pics of the car pre-accident? Is the car definitely now a write off (and you're arguing over payout value) or are you looking at possibly having it repaired and returned to the road? Officially the club doesn't do valuations but if the cases are exceptional, we might be able to sort something out.

Hi, if you could help that would be wonderful!
Andy is hoping to repair it so it isn't a complete write off, we have got pic's of it pre crash to show what condition it was in. We've had to go through the finacial Ombudsman as the insurance company won't budge. Cheers!

If its not a write off and the insurance company is repairing it - how do you need help in valuation?

The Insurance company are not paying for the repairs, as they're going to cost at least ?1000 and they originally valued the car at ?300 (now uped to ?450). So they have written it off, but Andy has decided to repair it to sell. It only has been damaged on the drivers side front panel and wing & inner wing. HE has just bought a new Mk1 Gti for ?2,000.

We can't give individual valuations as so much depends on seeing the car. However you could print out our Price Guide here
The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

as well as checking guides in classic car mags. You can also find adverts for similar cars on ebay (look for completed listings for final selling prices). Finally show them pics and receipts for work done.

Can I advise you potentially save this problem happening again (if lightning strikes twice) by becoming a member and going for a classic policy (easier if you are over 25) with member discount and agreed valuation from Footman James? You will probably find you have better cover AND save money!

Thanks for your help! Fingers crossed the price list should show that Andy's car is worth more that ?450. Cheers
