insurance - costly innit!

I'm just trying to get quotes for an 83 1.5 GL I'm supposed to pick up this weekend…

Quotes so far ranging from ?577 TPFT with HIC to ?1200 FC…all more than I'm buying the motor for!

Nuts considering the lowest ?577 quote has my 9 years no-claims mirrored!  Think I'm let down by living in a Brixton postcode though even though it's nice round here :banghead:  :dontknow:

I got quoted ?140 and that's with a 160bhp engine conversion, extensive other 'go faster' mods too, etc. Because it was on a limited mileage policy and low risk in other respects. So it goes to show you can still achieve cheap insurance, its just a case of the circumstances rather than the car itself, I think. The problem with limited mileage classic insurance is it can't be your daily driver (a requirement of the policy is you have another car) and also you'll soon exceed the agreed mileage if it were!

these are all with classic policy people (sureterm direct, footman james, chaucer, trinity lane), and I limited mileage to 6k - as have a camper for the summertime  8)

now got it down to ?345 TPFT by putting the motor into my missus name, putting excess up to 500 (the cost of the car 8O) .  This is still ?100 more than I pay for my 2.1 camper fully comp at same address…

such a chore typing in the same details onto all these bloody websites!

ranty rant rant!

Spent 30 mins on the computer Saturday as I was picking me new Sportline Sunday. Fully comp 8-9K miles a year daily commuting incl ?250 excess 5 years NCB all for a whopping ?280.00 includes No Claims protection and legal cover. I had quoted right up to ?600.00 couldn't believe it. So got a big smile on my boat race from not only a lovely new motor but nice cheap insurance. Good old e-sure.com

?964.
Thanks tho :)

The main issue is that I have 9 yrs NCB that I use on the camper, but it isn't taken into account on this car.  I have 6 years NCB earnt on my bike, also not taken into account.
Silly that it's not, after all it is ME that has the lack of claims, not the car!!  No wonder there's so many people driving uninsured out there…

If its a classic policy, they shouldn't be expected to be transferring a NCB (this is only valid for one car at a time, and if you have a 2nd car….) but they should take it into account when quoting. After all, NCB is a bonus, not a right.

I was an idiot when i started driving as i done so with no licence/insurance/tax for about 2years

Sorry guys but i was young foolish and utterly stupid :banghead:

I was caught on more than one occasion (rightly so) and recived a 6month ban (12points) shortly followed by 8 more points all for no insurance. For some reason they never gave me points for having no licence (strange eh?)

Anyway i live near W4 london and insurance has always been expensive round here so after i had passed my test i got myself a 52plate saxo 1.1 3dr after calling around on the phones for a month i managed to get a quote for ?1100pa TPFT with no NCB at age 21. The first set of quotes i got were about ?2500!! The same as i paid for the car!!

After 3months my wife fell pregnant with my son and i decided to get a bigger car. I got a vectra 1.8 Xplate and this pushed my premium up to ?1550pa TPFT.

The insurance since has dropped sizably since.
Last year 1yrs NCB ?920pa
This years with 2yrs NCB only ?525pa
Both TPFT

Talking from my personal experiance the best advise i can give as ive spent months on the phone is if you are able to try to get all your quotes direct from the broker by phone.
The websites are a pain to navigate. All this  :nerd: is pointless and even after you have your quote you still need to repeat all the information over the phone to the broker anyway so why waste your time :banghead: .
Remember dont settle to quickly if you hear a good price as many companys will be willing to better your quote to get your cash over another firm. Get you quote confirmed if it sounds good so you can use it as a concrete quote.
If the firm says that the price is only valid for the duration of the call then its your choice if you get it or not but i have turned these quotes down before and found better after.
Quotes from websites arent waterproof and if you give your best price as a web quote to the broker they WILL disregard it and give you a quote of there own anyway.

Basicly the more quotes you get and the more calls you make the cheaper it will be in the end as these people want your money.

Companys i can recommend/have used/am using

4 young drivers 08004084655
First insurance for men 08009775015
Quoteline Direct 08448884038
Markerstudy - Not sure on number. I think it might be this 08701666506 but not sure.

Just keep pushing and calling mate you will get an agreeable price in the end.

Good luck and let us know how you get on :y:

I dont do a lot of miles and I have literalyy just got a quote or 6k a year, with a value of 5k for my Rivage, I am 25 with 4 yrs NCD.

500 quid excess and it was a shade over 400 quid. 450 if i want to protect my NCD and legal cover. That was with esure from moneysupermarket.com

I am sure everyone on here at some point has paid more for insurance than the dam car is worth, but it is so way that simple.

My mate had a crappy old volvo (not sure why) and it must have weighed a huge ammount, his insurance was over 1k. But if you can imagine the damage that thing could do should he have a crash (which he did).

That is what they are protecting themselves against.

Lots of things contribute to your price too, I live in an m33 postcode and just because of this, even though i live on a decent road etc my quote is high because the number of claims made in this postcode is higher than the average.

thanks for all your help you lot ^^^^ :D

Given I'm buying this Mk1 for my missus, and she's the registered keeper and main driver then Diamond Insurance (who specialise in insurance for female drivers) came in best.

?263 TPFT, at age 33 with 0 years NCB, kept on street in Brixton, and limited to 6,000 miles p.a. and with myself as named driver.

1.5 GL tintop

Next closest was Lancaster at ?290 but the bloke on the phone was an idiot, and I'd rather have paid more to go with someone else.

Just hope the car's alright when I see it tomorrow.  I presume the key things to check are on this site somewhere…
