Immobiliser or Alarm for insurance?

I have just bought a mk1 gti with no alarm or immobiliser fitted at all.  :?

Can anybody tell me what insurance companies would most appreciate when i go searching for quotes.

Is a thatcham 1 or a thatcham 2 the way to go?  :dontknow:

ANY help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Andrew

I got a cat2 clifford immobliser fitted to mine by a PO, it cost ?250 fully fitted 4 years ago!!!

When i was looking for insurance the main comanies wouldn't insure without a cat 1 or 2 alarm fitted.

My classic policy does not require it, but it's great for piece of mind :D

Basically cat1 means it is an alarm AND immobiliser and cat2 is immobiliser only, you can get a 2 to 1 upgrade if you already have a cat 2 but for a couple of hundred quid you should be able to get a cat1.

Insurance should be cheaper with a cat1 fitted.

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

they are good if your worried about the car going walkies, but if ur on a tight budget check you'll get a discount first, i had a tracker fitted to my mkiv turbo, the singing and dancing version, as soon as your car moves without the key in the ignition tracker are on the phone to you! and it didn't bring the cost down at all, not even 1p discount.

Some companies won't insure you against theft without an alarm or an imobiliser but will still insure you for crashes etc.

Most insurance companies will specify that a CAT 1 must be fitted. You should also have the paperwork to show that its been professionally fitted for insurance to be valid!

Footman James will insure you fully comp even if you have nothing fitted at all. With FJ, having security makes no difference at all as I'm sure I've read that they don't actually insure the car for theft between certain times at night if the car if over a certain distance from home!

Ross I enquired on this as I'm with footman james and they said it need to be garage when at home between 10pm and 6am, but this aplies in certain area only, my area is low risk so it doesn't.

I still put it in the garage though :D

Cool, I'll be ok when parked at home too them but I guess leaving it in a town over night as a one off wouldn't be covered?

Immobilisers I understand (my Golf has one) and trackers too, but car alarms…? I mean, when was the last time anyone paid any attention whatsoever to a car alarm?

Cheers,

Drew.

No thats ok, they don't say that you have to take the car home with you, just park it in a garage when the car is at home
