AVOID Hastings Direct like the plague

What an absolute load of **** this company is. I've recently bought a new daily driver, a mk4 gt tdi and had to cancel my classic insurance in order to use the NCB for my new daily driver. My premium for the mk4 came in at £477(paid in full) which I thought was steep for someone with 4 years NCB and someone who has held a Clean licence for 18+ years but went with it anyway. They then contacted me wanting proof of NCB which I provided. They have just contacted me again telling me there was a typo on the on-line form, saying that the date I acquired the vehicle was wrong and there needs to be an adjustment to the premium, I was expecting an admin charge at most, but no, they wanted an extra, wait for it……………£540:o so that's nearly £1020, which I do not have. I told them I couldn't afford it and they just cancelled my policy leaving me stranded away from home with no cover. All this from just trying to prove my NCB:ocf_emoticons__BangHead::ocf_emoticons__BangHead::ocf_emoti

I've said it before and I'll repeat, Car insurance is legalised extortion. You are legally obliged to have it and they know that.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

When I took out my classic ins, I had no other car but still had some NCB from my last insurance and they asked me to provide it, I think some companies still want it tbh.

Hastings have been back in touch with me now and can almost half the premium to £569, which is still too much imo but they have hold of my money from when I paid for the last policy, so there is a balance of £111 to pay which is still wrong imo :P  they are charging me a cancellation fee now from the last policy :|   They've got me by the short and curlys on this one as I have no money to pay for a policy with someone else while I wait for a refund from them. Grrrrr I hate insurance companies.

I couldnt use NCB against classic insurance. Have they made a mistake?

Who do you have cover with? My classic ins was with Herts Insurance through Flux Direct and they wanted proof of my NCB when I took it out.

I am still interested in taking out a policy for my Mk1 even though it's under restoration at the minute but I'm now scared it'll be a massive premium now that the NCB is with my Daily O_o

Complain to the ombudsman who handles complaints for insurance companies.
If it is there mistake, or if they are treating you unfairly (which I would say they are by one min the policy going up to over a thousand pounds and then cancellation there and then for not paying.
For them then to ring and offer it less at a later date anyway)

Every case costs them a lot of money to admin and then investigate (which they are obliged to do if one is made) its worth a try.

Ring inSurance first before ringing ombudsman and say you've been mistreated and its unfair what you have done , cause I know the ombudsman charges the insurance company's £500 if they look into a case and find something, so may be your bargaining tool,  hope that helps. Matt
