Agreed value policies....

Hi all, Im building my dream show car, its currently a 1.3 mk1 driver, its been fully stripped out and is soon getting a BRM Motorsport 1.8 GTi engine with TSR head and a full spray in Stratos blue. Im going to spend about ?2000 on it and hope it to be worth in the region of ?4000 when finished.

Do you know any good insurance comapnied who do agreed valuation policies? I just dont want it being smacked by someone and only being given ?500!

Well I personally use HIC in Bishops Stortford Essex.  Their way of Agreed value insurance is quite straight forward.  You call and say you want an AVI policy and they send a form to complete.  You have to state vehicle and condition, modifications etc and supply a series of photo's of various aspects of the car.  Also get an impartial opinion from a proffesional garage which they have to complete also (they do check up on this).  Send it all off and hopefully they will agree.  They return your photo's too.
I did mine through them for my Campaign agreed value of ?4000 and it was the princely sum of ?223.

Also you can get extra dicount through certain companies by being a paid member of this club.

There are a few other agents out ther for AVI, but Ihave never used them so can't comment.

Hope this helps

they ask the mileage- on what? the  engine or the car?!

the car currently has done 151'000 miles but will be stripped out completely and rebuilt using new parts so that shouldnt really be taken into account. The engine was rebuilt 1000 miles ago so that should also be considered. Do they drop the value with more miles then?

I wil have to ring adrian flux i think and have a word!

It's the agreed milege covered per year, not total miles covered by the car.

I have a 6000 mile a year insurance from Footman james, very reasonable with agreed value.

am still having problems getting quotes.

I have worked out that if i spend bout ?2000 on the car i would probably want to insure it for ?3000. Im only going to use this car for about 4 or 5 shows a year other than that it will be garaged. It is a concours only car!

I rang Aidrian flux who would not do an agreed value policy because of my age (21). I dont see how my age will affect the value of the car!

Just spoke to 2 others advertised in the yellow pages.
One wouldnt insure me as im under 25.
The other wouldnt agree a value any higher than ?1800 for the car, and that would be with an excess of ?500!

What if someone nicks it? i would of put all that hard work in and ?0000's worth or parts and get a percentage back. They even said even if i gave them receits that cover over ?2k of stuff that still doesnt make the car worth that amount.
But i want it properly covered!

Can anyone help? Anyone suggest a name of a company?

a classic policy is the only way, but as you've found out it may be difficult to get because of your age.
The cost of a rebuild does not indicate the value of the car though, i.e a jaguar e-type may cost 100,000 to totally rebuild but its value is still only 70-80k.
I'm not suggesting your car won't be worth the money you value it at but the insurance companies are mean at the best of times so will value it at market rate which for a good mk1 is way undervalued

problem is they wont do a classic policy as its modified! It was a 1.3 and is now going to be a gti with 140bhp!

They wont do a classic policy as its modified and because of my age.
They wont do an agreed value because of my age.
They wont do a modifed car policy because of my age!

I dont get it, how am i supposed to insure it?
Its like, ive had a 16v mk2 gti and a 8v mk2 gti insured before and have never had a claim ever! i have 2 years NCB to use and am only doing limited mileage.
They are acting as if i have a Nova SR with neon lights and tinted windows!

Anyone suggest any companies? Cheapest i have so far is ?850 which i think is lame compared to what i was paying for my 16v at the age of 18 with no NCB!
