1.8 clipper or gti?

hi,
I am a 20 year lad, looking at getting a cabriolet for the summer, I am at uni for most of the year so my mum will be the main driver which means I can put her as the main insurance name and myself as a named driver making it a fraction of the price.

I am split in decision at the moment whether to get a gti and pay the extra insurance (?1200) or a standard 1.8 which is about ?500-600

Does anyone know the true difference in performance between both these engines and is it worth it?

If anyone knows any cheaper insurance for myself then it would be much appreciated. I have a clean licence with no claims and mum has 9+ no claims bonus

cheers

been driving 23years owned  2mk1 gtis ,4 mk2 git, 2 scirocco's
then got in to bike's,just got back in a car after 6 on bike's (gsxr1000,sv1000s)so had no NCB for a car :( ,had a test drive mk2 & mk1 gtis but got  the clipper because differance in profomance din't justify the cost in insurance!,…..think i must be getting old

the difference is about 20 bhp  8O

however if you put a gti camshaft in and the gti exhaust (inc manifold)
that figure would be dramatically reduced and as there not after market upgrades whod know

gti or clipper

alright mate, just wondering which insurance company did you get 5-600 pound quote from?? i would say get a GTi over a Clipper, as i have a clipper myself. in summer its fine but when its cold youl'll have problems. Injection is probably more reliable.

The problem is that insurance companies are warey of young drivers being named on policys for fast or high risk vehicles. The GTi, because of its name falls into this catagory, hence the price difference.

In my opinion if you're not going to use it much, I don't see how you can justify a ?500 - ?600 increase in insurance! You'll get just as much enjoyment out of a carb model, and be saving some cash which you can spend getting a better car in the first place!

thanks a lot for all that info,
I got the quotes from confused.com and all cheaper ones were online deals.
It sounds like the Gti is not a lot quicker but maybe more reliable with injection especially in the winter.
Just one last thing, does anyone have a 0-60 times for both the clipper and the GTI, I can imagine the mk1 gti is a lot slower than the well known mk2, is this correct?

Can't you buy a cheap 1.1 and dress it up as a GTI?

Think I will be ok thanks, have had to drive a 86bhp hatchback for a few years now and I would rather get something faster rather than slower, plus some of us arent that sad...........
