How to repair your grill trim (the ghetto way)

Post

Hey guys, seeing as my grill trim was off I thought i'd show everyone a quick and easy way of straightening twisted, kinked and bent grill trims.

You will need

- A 7mm Allen key (socket one won't work as you'll need the perpendicular handle, if you have a 7mm square block this would be perfect but not everyone will have one!
- Your choice of smacking implement, a small panel beating hammer is ideal, a 24oz sledge hammer is not.
- Small flat head screwdriver
- flat solid surface

Right, so using your small flat head screwdriver slowly and carefully bend out the tabs holding the trim pieces in position. DO NOT rest the screwdriver on the grill and then try and lever the tab out as you'll probably end up snapping the plastic. Once the tabs are all bent, carefully remove the grill trim, trying to yank it out will probably result in a bent piece of aluminium that'll be about as useful as Anne Frank's drum kit.

Now you have your trim out in one piece, place it face down on your work surface

You can't really see in this picture but the trim piece has kinked out aswell as bent a bit. Time to bust out the allen key.

Place it just behind the damaged area ( make sure the perpendicular piece of the allen key is poiting directly upwards!)and gently hammer it in, if the area behind is straight, the allen key should just push in.

Using your hammer, hit your allen key on the perpendicular section (that's the sticky out bit) until it has gone all the way through the damaged area.

Now, flip the trim piece onto it's side and again using your hammer, gently tap the trim where the allen key is placed, once that side is flat, flip the piece over and repeat

Remove the allen key and voila, not perfectly straight but once fitted to the grill it will be fine. Shouldn't take you more than a minute or two!

Doing this on a piece of smooth wood like ply would help stop chipping the paint off, plus it won't follow any indentations of the concrete underneath.

Brill idea and that the 7mm key fits neatly into the channel…
