Yet another staring issue question!

Gents

My 1.8 GTI (83) had sat for 7 odd years, taken off the road with an electrical fault, I have been trying to get it running again but alas it won't fire up, I have been reading many posts about various issues and tests, but have drawn a blank!

What I have done,
New fuse box, the old one had gone green (my original electrical fault),
New oil/filter,
Flushed out the old fuel and replaced with new,
New plugs/leads
New air filter,
Flushed the old water out
Even new injectors

Pretty much everything you would do as standard. It has a spark from all plugs (don't I know it…) When you try and start you can hear the fuel pump prime and the car turns over but doesn't fire, checked the fuel, and nothing came out of the injectors! swapped the relays to make the pump run constant and vola all 4 injectors have a nice strong flow when you manually lift the air sensor flap, what am I missing? what other tests can I do?

Any advice is most welcome

Kev

Could be a few things.
To confirm spark, I would remove the inlet from the throttle body, open the throttle and spray a load of carb cleaner in, and then try a start. If you have spark it will fire (albeit briefly).
If you have the throttle part open, does it start?
You'll need a fuel pressure test guage to check the control pressure. If it is isn't right, there will be too much pressure on the control plunger, so the air flap won't move enough. This is how I made mine - https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=new-technical-non%2Fdiy-fuel-pressure-test
If the pressures are correct then you could try tweaking the mixture adjust up a little at a time to see if that makes a difference - that was the issue with mine in the end.

I Will try your ideas tonight Pace, it safe to start with the pump running constantly Steve?

Yes it's safe to run it, just don't leave it running when you turn the engine off.

Good point. Would rule out a fuel pump relay issue.

Quick update, tried to start the car with the fuel pump running constantly, nothing, lifted the air sensor flap manually and I got a few coughs and splutters, I have ordered the parts to make a pressure tester... watch this space!
