195 is the usual t-stat.
180 can be used but then the cars heater won't work as good.

Drill a Burp hole in the lip of the new t-stat to eliminate air bubbles while filling, 1/8th or 1/16.

I would also suggest that you flush and back flush your system as well as long as you have a new t-stat, be sure to buy the t-stat cover and new o-ring.

Hi thanks bri.
What is the 195 a reference to?
None of the stats on eurocar parts look like yours 😂🤔

Well on this side of the car the t-stats are rated by temperature that they open at in fahrenheit as well as part number…. so you can ask for a lower opening t-stat for desert places, or in the deep south where in the summer it can get 140+F on the asphalt.

The top one at £6.16 is the one you want, Briano1234 is working in Fahrenheit while we are in Celsius, about 88 degrees is the opening temperature of the thermostat then the coolant flows into and around the radiator.

Coolant, 5l is plenty for a change. you need to change this stuff every couple of years, it's ready mixed so you know it's the right strength.

You will probably have the plastic flange on the water pump which the thermostat is housed in they plastic and can distort and get brittle so you may be better of buying a new flange to fit as well.

Thanks lads you two seem to be the main contributors to my posts I really appreciate the time taken to respond and I'm sure you are aware I'm no mechanic so I'm finding your responses invaluable. Especially the links mark like you have brushed on finding a generic part for my car such as a thermostat is difficult on a cross over year I get linked to alot of mk2 stuff.
I'm just trying to do as many jobs as conceivable for me to do to keep those mechanic costs down.
I already have that coolant mark thanks. I can't really flush the system properly as the car is cutting out tho so till that is sorted all I can do is prep the coolant system

If you cant run the car to get rid of air blocks when changing the thermostat as most of the coolant from the engine will come out when you remove it.

Make sure your heater is set to hot before doing anything, remove bottom radiator hose to drain radiator then remove the thermostat and change it, refit thermostat housing and re fit bottom radiator hose, remove the top radiator hose from the engine/head end and fill up the radiator to near the top or just coming out of the hose, refit top hose then remove the top hose from the radiator end and pour coolant into the engine/head till it's just coming out of the hose when you try and refit to the radiator.

Remove coolant filler cap and top up expansion bottle, leave the cap off and start the engine if you can and leave it to tick over to burb out any air locks.

Early Mk2 golfs did have the DX engine with k-jet fuel injection and some of the stuff on the later engines with the Digifant fuel injection system are the same as they are basically the engine block.   If not sure which parts you need you can always ask…

21 years of driving my car as a daily drive and 292,000 miles on the car I've changed most things a few times..   Ask Briano1234 about anything electrical as that's not my strongest subject.

That brill mark thanks and good lehmans terms for me 😂👍
Iv got the old thermo out did not expect the amount of water out I got haha.
Only just realised that water can run freely from expansion tank out of the where the thermo came from. Thought there and be flaps stops etc do I need the engine running for a proper flush or would a hose pipe do the job?
New radiator is already in coolant system pretty much ready to go wen nee thermo arrives just thought u needed engine running to flush it?

No you don't need the engine running to flush the system, hose pipe in the the outlets till the water runs clear then try another outlet etc.

Thing Is without changing both pumps and the filter how do you know if they are the issue? I had a while new fuel system installed before it went in garage 8 years ago. From filler neck to injectors 20180509_200933.jpg
