What to do?

I have a 89 gti and I've got a question for you all. I want to upgrade the engine and I've been told that a upgraded cam and cam pulley with uprated valve springs is the way forward but it's slightly costly. Is it worth just putting a different engine in? What's everyone think?

All depends on how much money you want to spend and how much work you want to.
Do you want to keep the original look of the engine bay? If not a 1.8l 20v turbo is a popular upgrade.

If you are upgrading performance you will need to upgrade the brakes and possibly handling as well.
