What seal is this please?

Post

Hello

Hoping someone can help me on this one… I have noticed a lot of condensation 'inside' my car this winter, I have spotted a gap between two seals on the drivers side and think I need to replace the seals.

I just don't know which is which, does anyone know which seal this one would be as shown below by the red line?

There is supposed to be a foam strip that seals off the ends of the seals, there is also some compression in those that you can remove them and lube and clean the rails, then re-install and reposition, which is what I imagine the issue is.

To remove the Seals from the tray work a dull flat blade in from the rear of the seal tray in the middle and pull it up and out from the middle on the front seal the B pillar seal is Fragile Do not try to remove them by pulling them out from the ends it will break off….They have to be pryed out gingerly…Clean them with WD-40, then a little Vaseline in the groove of the tray front and rear and reinsert by putting the back side (interior) in the grove, and squeezing the seal  from the sides with a little rocking motion to "PoP" them back in place.  To re-position them to the ends prior to putting the seal caps on you use the PALM of your hand and Push the Gasket to the left or right to get a Mate. The front seal (A Pillar) is held in with Glue and a screw at the end you don't have to take it totally out to reposition it, but I do suggest Lubing and cleaning the length.

Door sag, Eccentric Adjustment, and window height all play in to sealing as well as window glass to "B" pillar tightness.

in the Archive section How-To I have a thread as to Briano's links to Fixes, also the click link in my signature on where is your top leaking…. and all the possible fixes that I have found… Yes that little foam, if you can find Closed Cell Foam Sticky Backed, about 1 1/2 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick you can make your own…. :)

Truck topper seal kits are good to use, and you get quite a few meters of that to play with…. :)

Thank you Briano1234 🙂

I have ordered 4 from eBay so I can try and put a fix to this ASAP.

On another note, I have left a question on VW Heritage site regarding the hood to windshield seal for a 1990 cab, don't suppose you know what version I would need as the one on the site does not appear to cover my model?

It’s unlikely such a small gap would cause massive condensation unless your in an open area with constant rain.
Those seals do tend to shrink.
However you can stretch them a bit .
Remove and refit stretching as you go.

I’d look at the rear window frame is sound and how well the hood has been fitted.
In areas like the front and around the rear window frame.  Water naturally sits at the glass and seal bottom.
An awful lot of fitters don’t re seal the glass to seal. Seal to frame and seal to outer hood.
You will get moisture from the atmosphere so ideally you need a Kampa damp buster.
It’s a big version of those tiddley things you put on your window Cill.

Ideally suited for caravans but even better in a Car.

Pop some photos up of the hood st the front lip and sides, rear etc.

Check that the drain holes in the scuttle are clear, drain holes on the door bottomed and no leaky heater matrix.
It’s not often I need to change these seals or the header.

Thank you all for the links and the help!!

I have ordered the foam cap ends (as my car appears to have none!)

I also spent a little time 'massaging' the seal to make a better seal on the drivers side, you can see the size of the gap I had in the images below.

Have also ordered the Damp Buster which will arrive later this week.

My front hood to car seal looks in bad shape??

& my passenger side view - following my adjustment this morning, the drivers side looks more like this now;

Thought as much
Your hood isn’t fitted properly at the front.
You’ll get moisture ingress from that.

It should look like this

The foam ends were not fitted from factory. They were introduced because of the gap
Appearing.

Because you’ve closed the gap up
There’s no justification in getting them unless the seals re shrink back and leave the gap.
I’d be more concerned with the hood fitting than the seal itself

How to repair your finger seal gap at the "a" pillar if there isn't a over lap.

You will find that once you get your glass to seals, and repair the seals or replace them if warranted, I too like Chortle haven't had to replace the "A" pillar seal on the 14 04 so hoods that I have replaced, if you clean it, and then use Vaseline to refresh it.  Getting the Top Material to the proper position, the finger wipers seals.

When I replace a top, I make sure that it is adjusted, doors windows and seals are all in position, and that the glass rolls up square and enfolds the seal where the glass up, or down is adjusted that it will roll into the seal and not bulge the glass at the door on the "B" pillar.
