Well as long as you have the car or happy that it's in a secure place which you have access to check it when you want, then I wouldn't be overly concerned for the safety of your car.

A V5 is not proof of ownership - more like someone trying to clone your car to rip off someone else sadly. Possible someone seen your car and took reg number.

Big thing though - you best check no one has taken the bonnet slam panel chassis plate off the car. Even if not they may have got a note of the EW chassis number off the plate or sticker in boot, reg no off car and of course the colour.

Certainly keep the police informed and look out on any other changes on dvla.

I would possibly change address on your log book you have to a family member / friend and then back again at a later date and see if anything arises from that.

Don't rule out an error by the DVLA, they're not unknown for them!

When you check the Govt. Tax site it does indeed show the V5C was last issued on the 22nd July 2023, however it's odd that the tax itself is showing as 'untaxed - due 2nd July 2023'.

That would imply your car was taxed until recently, which I'm guessing wasn't the case?

Off the top of my head, one possible scenario is they've got a registration letter / digit wrong when processing some other random persons application for a tax refund after them disposing of their own car.

At that point you've then got mixed up in the process, hence the' thank you for notifying us' letter out of the blue.

They other punter's likely sitting there wondering where the refund is!

Rule something innocent like that out first, hopefully it's nothing more sinister.

If it is though, be aware you've a lot of personal info. easily available on this site.

Your profile gives a date of birth (though might not be true of course) plus a mobile number, Googling that brings up your business postal address and other info. plus you cars registration is visible in the photos from the for sale post.

Not being critical, just saying someone else could find the same stuff out too.

Thank you for all the advice, I will keep you updated on progress, hopefully it's an error, I'm picking the car up tomorrow and tucking away until the dvla get back to me.

Thanks for all the advice, has now been resolved due to a clerical error on the DVLA side, who I must say have been very helpful which makes a change! new V5 on the way.
