Middle silencer pipe

Hi all, having problems trying to get exhaust system sorted for my 1991, 1.8 GTi cabriolet and was wondering if the middle silencer section is compulsory or could I just get a straight pipe made and put in place. Any info is much appreciated thanks in advance.

There's one here if you have a DX engine and not a digifant with a CAT fitted?

Or here for a UK seller but has a slightly different bracket at the back, I brought one like this but had to cut the brackets at the back off to fit.

You could fit a straight through pipe if you want but it will make your exhaust louder.

My Mk1 Scirocco has no middle silencer and just a back box as fitted from new.

Just for knowledge the middle silencer that you talk about is really over here called a resonator.

The purpose of this is to stop the hammering of the system to reduce the sound.

It does this by the design that the internal tube is hollow.
It is surrounded by another tube that welded to the interior tube ten sealed on the outside.

When the tube is hot or cold, the hammering effect of the exhaust gas is diminished because the expansion of the Gas Puffs against the interior metal is held in check by positive reinforcement of the heated air of the outer jacket this allows the Gases to flow out more evenly.

It is a pneumatic hammering reducer. The evening out of the pulses of exhaust is more smooth making less noise in the final silencer or Muffler as we call it over here.
