Have a problem with my golf 1 gearbox it has some noise towards the back end that goes away when clutch is pressed gear 1234 and reverse goes in 5th gear goes In but doesn't engage its as if the car is in neutral you can also shift it to fith gear without pressing down the clutch what could be the problem please help

Sounds like a broken selector fork inside the gearbox.
Will probably need taking out and stripping to check.
