'83 Mk1 engine problem

Post

Purchased a bit of a summer project and find I have '83 Mk1 5 door golf that started as a 1100cc but now has a MK2 1300 engine in it. Its missing the carb.

So, reading the reports and taking advice I opted for a single choke Weber and Mk 1 inlet manifold. now we can get the car to run but the fuel pump is pushing far too much fuel through to the carb. it looks like the original carb had a fuel return to the tank? also looks like the MK2 inlet manifold has a water jacket. the MK1 manifold doesn't have a vacuum connection for the brake servo?

am I correct in thinking that you cant get a twin choke weber replacement for the 1300? seems the logical way would be to used original MK2 manifold and find a replacement carb?

some of the carbs had a swirl pot near the car which allows for a fuel return so that could help.

i think your best bet is a later manifold if you have a brake servo, otherwise it'lkl be a bit tricky to stop unless you convert back to the servoless setup…

On my cabrio 1,6 there is a fuel seperator bowl between the fuel pump and the carb. This has 1 inlet from the pump. And 2 outlets where one is going to the carb, and the other to the return fuel line back to the tank.

I do not know if your engine should have the same system or not, but worth checking.
