I don't know how many of you use your Mk1 regularly in London but if you do, attached is how I challenged ULEZ and got all of my fines totalling over £1K cancelled.
I received 11 identical emails like the one attached. My details of appeal is also attached.
TFL have now classed my car as compliant, but this does not apply to all 1983 cars, just mine which is unfair; so if you are in the same position see the attached and use whatever is applicable for you.
However, I still have to pay Rd Tax until April, I guess you have to pick your battles…
but if you don't want Pay-Per-Mile vote Susan Hall
Good luck!

I'm not subject to ULEZ, but it's still interesting to understand how it works for historic vehicles all the same.
Going to play devils advocate here, so don't be going off on one, I'm not trying to argue for one side or the other.
Can you clarify which of your four grounds for appeal they upheld / caused them to abandon their case?

I have no idea which of my arguments landed.
Maybe it was a combination of more than one.
However, I'm sure that TFL did not want to risk losing and setting a precedent (which they have done regardless) especially as my car was going to be exempt in a couple of months anyway.

The adjudicator has possibly upheld your appeal, not because they agree with your four points (appears they didn't even look into them in the circumstances), but because the TFL didn't contest matters?
Arguably that's slightly different from them conceeding you'd one or more valid points that won the argument.
That's probably a pro-forma letter notifying you of their decision, it's the bit about not having to pay future fines that stands out and you'd maybe need more clarification on.
My reading of the ULEZ exemption for historic vehicles is your car will be eligible from the 1st April this year.
Not saying that's fair, nor why they do things that way, just that if it's correct and what the regulations seem to state it might not work for you as a defense on it's own.
I'd speculate the signage being missing or not adequate would probably be the stongest decider in your favour and why TFL didn't pursue things, problem might be if they've maybe since sorted that as a consequence of your complaint.
Wouldn't want you fall foul of the cameras between now and then if it turns out the historic status exemption has yet to kick in.
Hope that makes sense, hard to put into words without rabbiting on!

I don't think I said that the tribunal decided on any of my arguments, I did not even have to attend.
What I said was that TFL did not want to challenge in case they lost on any one or more of my arguments.
I received a separate email from TFL saying that my car is now compliant and have checked on their website and it is indeed compliant, so no more fines.
However, I also checked my previous 1983 Mk1 A reg and that one is NOT compliant, which is why I am posting in case anyone else is in the same boat. They do not have to make the same arguments but just use my case as a precedent and say that they want the same.

Everything seems to be a struggle nowadays when it comes to classics, can only see it getting worse too.
The cynic in me says it's become a handy back door way of trying to get them off the roads.

If Sadiq Khan wins another term he will implement Project Detroit i.e, Pay-Per-Mile to replace ULEZ and that will apply to all cars, including those that are currently exempt such as classics and electrics.
This will then be the blue print for the rest of the country
So vote Susan Hall and get Khan out!
