Live in london might have to get rid of mk1 on 1992 plate as its not old enuff. Help?
Thinking to do an engine conversion maybe 1.8T engine straight or 1.4 polo petrol but will this afffect my insurance? I dont know. Got a bill quote for £12-15,000 yes you heard right, to do a basic engine swap with gear box. Thinking if I do that, the car will be worth a million bucks… I wish! I just dont want to scrap it or get rid. It was a present from deceased parent. hmmmph. Or is it time to let it go? Its a VW Rivage Cab. with replaced brown leatherette seats. I think it looks nice. Brown/black interior with blue rivage exterior. Black lined roof. So simple. pretty much standard. rides ok. does leak unless u put through a car wash and then it dribbles as there is a slight gap allowing water if shot under the roof. Some rust under the hood I have had since I bought it 13 years ago. apart from that and a slight scrap and dick on the pasenger side back - hardly noticeable - easy fix, there is nothing else. It has heated front seats, and electric windows and roof.
If I need to sell it? if I buy a new car could get as much as 3K for its value. what to do? I dont really want to part with it. Its on 106K. only clocked it last novemeber 2019

Whats the problem exactly?
Are you saying that with living in London it costs too much to store? or run? or it'll be banned due to some pollution act?
As it's a 'rarer' car it would be a shame to swap the engine, however if that it what you need to do to keep and be able to use it in London then maybe it's worth doing.
If you were to sell it (not part ex it in some random scrappage scheme) I would suggest it is worth much more than 3k.

12K for an engine swap? that seems a little too out there, and I would suspect that the person doesn't really want the Job.
A rebuilt engine is usually less than 1500 and less of you do the work, and there isn't much to it.
Dropping a Engine and a Tranny is about 4 hours the first time. With 106 on the odo I don't think you need to have a swap or tranny rebuild.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.
Where are my DIY Links?

106,000 miles is just run in for a DX engine, my engine did 270,000 miles before it needed work…
The Riviage is a sort after car and original examples are worth more money than cars with a engine swop.
If you do want a Mk1 Golf with a 1.8 turbo engine it will be cheaper to buy one already done than you have been quoted to change your cars engine…
Lots of 1.8 turbo cars out there as it's a common swop.

I'm a little confused as to what the subject of this thread is exactly but if you are thinking of fitting a 20vt to get around the ULEZ issue then I think you are wasting your time.
The 1.8t lumps are already very heavily road taxed for their capacity which means they aren't very clean (well if you believe the pony we are fed on emissions)
The point being it won't long before these are banned anyway.
The gutting thing about this is the DX can if we'll set up run very clean. On my last MOT the tester was very excited by the fact my car actually had cleaner emissions than a new Prius but it would automatically be fined in the ULEZ

Time for the electric engine conversion i think, but rather expensive. Theres an article about it in january edition of practical performance car.(not golf specific).

I've looked at a few cars and places which do electric conversions to classics cars… it's not a cheap option…
Goblin works garage on the telly did a Fiat 500 conversion this week and the motor, battery and stuff to charge it was £14,000 and they had to fit it… I thought the ULEZ was for diesel cars? Sorry don’t know much about it as I live in Somerset and try to avoid if I can going to London..

I live in South London and have a Mk1 Golf Clipper that I'm considering selling. It's been a daily driver for the last 28 years… what's it worth?
