Tyre size headache!

Post

Evening all.

Having some issues with tyre sizes!

My Mk1 is yet to run having been stood for 10 years and I'm slowly trying to get bits ticked off my list, the tyres that are on it currently have a date stamp of 2003 so are well overdue a change! Currently they are 185/50/14's which doesn't seem to give me a huge amount of choice for replacements- is there a reason the previous owner would have opted for this size as it doesn't seem standard from what I can tell?

The car is on coilovers and will be staying on them at least for the foreseeable future at least to get it through an MOT - it is sat relatively low which may be reason for the lower profile? (See photo)

Does anyone else run coilovers if so what size tyre do you run - I'm wondering if 185/55/14 is doable?

Thanks all.

Jack.

What's the width of your wheels and ET, are they spaced out?
Standard tyres are 185/60/14

Not sure off the top of my head, it's only been with me since Wednesday, will get a wheel off when I get back up to the unit this week.

Mine are 185/60 14

Maybe previous owner not too fussy and got a better price for the 50 profile at the time

Use this to help choose if you want to change size

Tyre Size Calculator/Tire Plus Sizing Calculator - Tyre Dimensions for Plus Sizing

As said before, on 14" wheels the original size was 185/60x14 and if it was 13" they were 175/75x13. You want your new tyres to be within 3% of original size

13 inch wheels would have 175/70x13 from factory.
