Timing check on DX new build

Post

Hi

Can someone confirm I'm not getting mistaken here as I've got a new built engine with the project I purchased which isn't firing up on a 1983 DX Gti

I'm checking the static timing first and with the cam mark lined upto the head, valves correct and at TDC, its lining up with the mark on the flywheel to the Diamond cut out not the dimple.

Other posts point to this being incorrect, should I remove the belt and align the marks to the dimple

Thank you

Following this i need to remove the cam belt and time it to the dimple on the flywheel as i thought, and ensure the dot on the cambelt pulley is level with the top of the valve cover.

There's also a timing mark on the crank pulley and intermittent shaft, see pictures in this post.

Also worth dripping some oil over the cam shaft lobs.
Before starting for the 1st time remove the rotor arm or dissy cap and crank over the engine till the oil light goes out, then you would of built up oil pressure before starting.

Good luck

This is a very detailed guide https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=how-to_2%2Fguide-setting-your-cam_2
I always set mine using the timing mark on the crank pulley not the flywheel.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

Thanks both

Unfortunately there is no notch on the crank pulley as its a new one (not an original) so the flywheel is the only mark

Will do re the oil thanks Mark

check your diz as the rotor should point to plug for cylinder 1 and be in the middle of the hash stamped on the side frame of the diz.

I have never bothered with aligning the crank to the intermediate pulley as the crank at 0 dimple on the cam even with the valve cover tin, not the rebar.  and the rotor of the diz is in the middle of the hash.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Morning Briano

Thanks I checked the dizzy and looks correct to me, notch is pointing to nr 1 cylinder(cambelt side) at about 10 oclock and rotary arm lined up in centre of notch

(I did notice from other posts the dizzy notch pointing towards nr 4 cylinder which is confusing me)

All marks line up so its seeming they have timed it to the flywheels diamond cutout and not the 0 dimple.
