tailgate alignment issues

Post

So I've put the tailgate on Mynx, got it all nicely aligned.

Then I add the Myle support ram and for some reason the top corner of the tailgate (passenger s, next to the ram) seems to get pulled down.

I've swapped over hinges, added a couple of washers under the hinge and nothing seems to work!

Heeeelllllllppppppp me! :'(

Have you used this brand of ram before as it seems weird that that gap closes up, the only thing I can think is if the ram is uprated that the force once closed is pulling the gate down. As both mounting points are  below the hinge it's pushing between the 2 and dragging the gate down. Have you got an old one to try ?

Not sure what car you have, tin top or cabriolet?

Is the boot strut on the right way up, eg when open the main body of the strut is on the top. not sure if it will make any difference?

This way around?

The old ones are broke hence the new one.

mark1gls  yup got it that way around (checked on the other tinny I have to be sure) , although yours is on the opposite side of the car!?

I'm thinking the ram is too powerful, hence it's pulling down the hinge.

Much weirdness!

You could always swap them out just to check ?
I've been having a think about the front ones too, I'm thinking a neat little bracket to bolt straight to the wing with the ball mounted at 90 degrees so it's facing into the car keeping it in line with the wing bolt. I'll see how I get on when I get back to work later this week

Hi Ian was just having a look to see if I could find any off the shelf brackets for the front struts when I came across this company, they may have the answer to your rear lid problem ADJUSTABLE STRUTS!! And they're in stainless!!

Sorry I should of added my picture is from my Mk1 Scirocco as that has 2 struts holding the boot up, Mk1 golf only have 1.

I presumed it was a different car, but the point was still valid. ta. it's not unusual for me to make stooopid mistakes but I did actually double check myself this time before adding a stupid question  :P

jamie8v interesting……………… and shiny too! Wonder what force is needed on the strut. hmmmmm

Well then, just spoken to SGS and they reckon that the force should be 470Nm in the strut. Apparently it does occur where the struts can be over gassed and will cause the issue I'm having.

They stock them off the shelf for mk1's! Proper British Engineered struts, for £20 inc delivery.

A bit more than others but Buy British, that's what I say. I did enquire about the adjustable stainless ones. £50 plus vat and shipping!

Went with the non bling version in the end.

We shall see!

Thanks chaps

So has the new ram turned up and has it solved the issue?

Yup, stuck it on last night.

Seems to be pulling the tailgate down a bit less. I'm hoping that with the glass in and a bit of tweaking it should be bang on.

jamie8v  ta for the tip.
