Sump plug size. 1983 1.8GTI DX engine.

When refitting my sump plug it was hard to get it started and I could only wind it in about 1 1/2 turns by hand before having to put a spanner on it (I would prefer to wind it all the way in before using a spanner just in case it's cross threaded!). I will be changing the oil in the near future and would like to get a new sump plug and washer. I just wanted to check the thread size before getting one.
Thanks.
Matt.

Thanks LeeO , that's a good website to have saved in my favourites !
Do you know if they're a 14mm thread?

Not sure, I think so, but pretty sure VW used the same sump plug for years across many models.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, from servicing lots of different cars it seems some certain engines do seem to just do this, a new plug might help a bit but if the threads dirty could always wip the sump off whilst changing the oil, run a tap through it & have a good look at your engine's health whilst you're there! If not doing that I'd just run the new plug in and out a few times then tighten it up

And always fit a new washer as they are a pain to change if the old one leaks.
I usually buy a few at one go.
