Suck or Blow

Post

No sniggering at the back, I'm referring to the cooling fan.

Mine is blowing and I reckon it should be sucking. If it is turning the wrong way, I assume that I simply turn the connector round effectively swapping the wires round?

Yours is correct, it should blow as 9 times out of 10 the fan will only kick in when you are stationary for a little while and when you start moving the air flow from out side will cool then engine.

Cheers. I've found that if the fan is on when I join the motorway, it stays on and though the car doesn't overheat, struggles to get the temperature down. I assumed it was because the blowing of the fan is counteracting air trying to get in, sandwiching the radiator between air flowing in two different directions.
I also noticed that on the fan motor is an arrow which points in the opposite direction to the rotation of the fan.
But if it's meant to blow, I'll leave it alone.

its supposed to suck air through the radiator into the engine bay, i.e. the same direction air flows if the car is moving

that's what I thought - in which case, as mine is blowing out, the fan is indeed turning the wrong way.

I assume that if I swap the wires over (ie turn the multi plug over / around) that the fan will turn in the opposite direction?

on my 1.6 driver some chump had managed to force the radiator fan plug on the wrong way up, so start there!#

if its an earlier one with 2x spades just flip them the other way

just popped out to swap the multi plug around - and cant. it has grooves so will only go on one way. will have to cut n shut the wires going into it over when I get home.

thanks for the advice though - much appreciated

ah you just have a single speed fan then. Mine was 2 speed with slow and fast speeds, 3 pin plug.

Mine also had the lockign tabs so it should only fit one way. and yet, the chump still managed to force the plug on upside down

mine only has two wires - which i'll swap over so that hopefully the fan spins in the opposite direction.

thanks again

Just checked mine and it turns clockwise (standing in front of the car and looking at the windscreen)
So is that a suck or blow?

I'll check that, my fan is not on a lot as not much traffic to get stuck in around here or on my way the work unless it's the "Glastonbury festival" ( Pilton festival to us locals as that's the village it in!)
Oh…. it is on, that's why it took me 2 hours instead of 30 mins to get home on Wednesday…

Clockwise rotation from the front would correspond with the way that my fan is now rotating...
