remove windows regulators, 1/4 light window frame and seals

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to strip down my cabby doors to have them resprayed. Is there a write up on here ?

I need to take the window regulators out along with the glass plus the 1/4 light window and frame and all the seals around the glass and door edging.  including the chrome strip.
Is this possible? and can I reuse the same seals?? and save the chrome strip?

I've got scraper seals off and have new ones to replace  - so doesn't matter to much about saving  these.

thanks

I have a how to on stripping down the door card to adjust the window stop.

Basically you can re-use everything just take care when removing the finger seal at the top and the little flap over seal, a heat gun may help you.

It should be just pressed in place, or overlap and push in to seal.

Once you get the Regulator and glass out of the door, then you attack your 1/4 windows.  There is a Screw that is at the top under the finger seal, and one at the bottom and possibly the middle depending on the version.
You have to remove the inner and outer scrapers, then using a rubber mallet, you smack the 1/4 frame to the rear of the car to unseat it from the door edge.  As you are removing it you will spin the frame 90 degrees to clear the door channel of the mounting bracket.

You remove the glass off the regulator first that is a couple of bolts.
Then there are about 5 or 6 10mm bolts that have to come out to get the regulator out, besure that you close it, that is lower it all the way as it is easier to take out.

I  don't have a specific tear down, but I have a bunch of how-to's with pictures.

wow, that is amazing info Briano1234 .

The chrome strip is proving difficult. as is the 1/4 glass. - It doesn't have the swivel as in your diagram. and I can only see 2 screws - top under the seal and at bottom behind door card. both of which I have removed.

Also the scraper seal clips are proving tricky to remove from the door.

and would you use adhesive to put the outer door seal back on? or does it just push in around the perimeter of the door?

thanks

I used Contact Cement on the seal going back on.

So you have the fixed corner wing?  There are the two screws at the top one holding the finger seal and one underneath and I think there are 2 screws on the bottom of the channel one is really a bear to get to IIRC.
Glad you mentioned this as I have to repaint my Drivers door soon.  (Got some sort of tar on it that scratched the paint.)  Going back I only replaced the one screw that was easy to get to.

Now you have to gently lift the  lip of the seal in side and out at the bottom and top and even sprayed wd-40 on it as I didn't want it to tear.

If you haven't remove the main glass, you will have to at least slid it to the rear of the door.

The Scrapers usually just pry off I use a very thin Plastic putty knife to assist in prying it up.

The worst part is going to be removing the inner upper trim.  Take care as it is vinyl covered foam and that foam can get brittle and crack. A putty knife fromt he bottom to gently pry it up helps work it front to back.

IIRC I used a Rubber Hammer and a shocked the 1/4 window after lubing it then it scooted to the back of the door to clear the seal. You could also try to pry it out with a plastic putty knife,,,

On the doors over here there were 2 styles of what you call 1/4 windows.  We call them Vent windows.

The 2 styles were Fixed as yours and my 90 cabbies have (because of the airbag) and pivoting 1/4 windows.

I thought that yours had the pivoting glass, but from your post you have the "Fixed" or non-movable 1/4 windows or vent wings.  The reason is that the Earlier Golfs over here that were the low end of the trim range had Fixed 1/4 glass, where the L, LS and Cabriolets all had Pivotable 1/4 glass till the 90's came out over here with the advent of the airbag.

Either style you have to remove the main window glass or remove it off the regulator and slid it to the rear of the door for clearance.

You will still have to turn it 90 degrees to get it out of the door because of the bracket that is welded to it.

Managed to get the window and regulator out. and yep, the 1/4 glass frame needs to be rotated 90 degrees and then back again to get the welded part out.
Wouldn't want to put it back together like that after freshly painted - may have to think about that one.

Is there anything scientific about getting the door hinge pin out? is it just knocked out from the bottom upwards?

Unbolt the 15mm or is it 14,,,, that holds the  hinges to the body.  That is what I do.

Ah, that's useful too. But I meant this pin here:

The pins are a Press Fit.  I have never replaced them on a rabbit or cabby, but have on trucks and other cars.
I used a Socket that went over the pin head at the top (deep-well) and I had a bolt for the bottom to push.

I used a large C-Clamp as the press., just be sure to use a penetrant oil on it prior and Grease the C-Clamp.

From your pics it has to come out from the bottom up as the finger lock splines are the give-a-way.

Managed to get the bottom one out ok. But the top one is going to damage the door if it comes out any further. As you can see. How do I get this one out ??
Has it been put in upside down??
