I might give it a go with the 8mm tap if that doesn't work but at the moment it's holding with a coarse threaded bolt that is probably whitworth but is still leaking, it's surprising how much oil seeps out with just the car idling for a minute or two, it's amazing how much time you can spend on something like this.
Will have another look at it tomorrow, thanks for the relies

The other problem with it was there was no 'o' ring on the tubular part that slots in to the gearbox, the only diagram I could find that showed one, you'll find one now, was in the old brown Haynes manual so I've put one there and it has now sealed, that is with my Whitworth bolt not forced or over tight.
So now it has an 'o' ring from an old Lister spares pack and a Whitworth bolt, 'Made in Germany refined in Britain'.
I'll source the 7mm x 1.25 bolts now and get it right.
